The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has deployed modern and sophisticated security machines, known as Advance Threat Identification X-Ray (ATIX), at the international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
A statement signed by the General Manager, Communications, FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said the deployment of the new system is part of a large-scale upgrade of MMIA entire security measures.
Dati said the system consisted of explosives trace detector and high performance walkthrough metal detector to check passengers and their hand luggage for explosives, illegal weapons, contraband, narcotics and related items thereby enabling safer air travel.
“A major difference from the currently used system is the ability to detect explosive materials and potential threat items real time with the lowest rate of false alarms. Other advantages of the new system include the ability to capture multiple views of hand luggage in a single pass, high speed image resolution, reduced inspection, and improved passenger experience. This is not only a major boost to MMIA safety and security rating but also to passenger confidence,” Dati said.

He also said that the Murtala Muhammed Airport was the first in the country to switch to the Advance Security System, adding that airports across the country would be expected to key-in to the new system soon.
