Dennis Okike is the 10th Ultimate champion!

The final task was to search for the 10th
Symbol. To do that, each of them would make
use of a clue which would take them to two
different locations to retrieve two pieces of
the map that would lead to where the 10th
Symbol was buried. Another clue at their first locations would direct them to the next
location. It was a race against time and the last man to
the next location was evicted. Edmund and
Ifunanya’s first clue led them to the Place of
the Talking Drum to retrieve the first map
piece; while Bobby and Dennis went to the Mud
Field. Subsequently, Bobby and Dennis headed to the Place of the Talking Drum for their
second piece while Edmund and Ifunanya raced
to the Mud Field. Edmund returned first, followed by
Ifunanya. Dennis edged Bobby out of the quest
when he beat him to the finish line. Bobby was
instantly evicted. With their maps pieced together, the remaining
warriors had all they needed to proceed to find
the Sceptre. On their maps three spots were
marked ‘X’ as possible places the 10th Symbol
was buried. Ifunanya was in the lead, having
figured out the direction first. However her first attempt at crossing the river with the aid
of a rope saw her falling into the water while
Edmund and Dennis moved on. Edmund arrived first and headed straight to
one of the spots marked on the map and began
his search. Dennis joined shortly. Ifunanya had
barely stepped in the river when Dennis raised
what turned out to be a false alarm. All he had
was a piece of debris laying under the river. The protracted search had the warriors
glancing at their maps intermittently as Dennis
kept digging up dirt after dirt from the river. After many futile efforts Dennis eventually
dug up the Sceptre from under a slant palm
tree in the river and thereby ended the long
search for the 10th symbol. He was instantly
inducted into the order of Heroes as the 10th
Ultimate Man by Chidi Mokeme, the Anchor- man. For his feat, Dennis will win N10 million and a
brand new Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0L GLS AT( full
Option) courtesy of CFAO Motors Nigeria, the
official automotive partners of Gulder Ultimate
Search 10. For emerging the last female
contestant standing, Ifunanya is already guaranteed N1 million in addition to her prize
money. In the same vein, Kalu Kalu, a final year student
of Industrial Mathematics in the Federal
University of Technology, Owerri, has emerged
as the first winner of the first ever fans edition
of Gulder Ultimate Search. The fans edition of
Gulder Ultimate Search was hosted by Bob Manuel Udokwu. Gulder gave fans and viewers
of the show a chance to compete in Nigeria’s
first 100 per cent local content reality TV show
from the comfort of their homes.

Army destroys Boko Haram operational vehicles in Borno

The Nigerian Army on
Thursday said it had destroyed two suspected
operational vehicles of the Boko Haram sect in
the ongoing operations in Maiduguri. The spokesman of the 7 Division of the
Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Lt.-Col.
Mohammed Dole, announced this in a
statement. Dole said that the destruction was to clear the
insurgents terrorising motorists on high ways
in Borno. “We have been able to identify camps used by
the terrorists in planning attacks against
motorists and innocent villagers in Kaga Local
Government Area of the state. “Troops of the division, supported by the
Nigerian Air Force, have been able to destroy
these camps since we began the operations
this week,” Dole said. He said three surveillance motorcycles
believed to be used by the sect in planning
attacks had also been recovered. “They mostly used the motorcycles in spying to
plan for attacks on innocent people. “The General Officer Commanding the division
(GOC), Maj.-Gen. Obidah Ethan, is happy with
the cooperation of the public towards
supplying vital information on the movement
of the terrorists. “I therefore wish to express our gratitude to
the public for the support and cooperation
extended to us so far. “We have been able to dislodge the terrorists
from their camps which have been their hiding
places. “They are now in disarray, trying to save their
lives instead of planning attacks on innocent
persons,” Dole said. He said the division had created patrol teams
on major high ways in the state to prevent
isolated attacks on motorists. (NAN)

N255m BMW bullet proof cars were not bought for me-Oduah

MINISTER of Aviation,Princess Stella
Oduah Thursday told members of the House of
Representatives Committee on Aviation that
the alleged purchase of N255million BMW
armoured cars were not bought for her
personal use. Oduah who astonished stakeholders with this
disclosure at the investigative hearing on the
issue in her 12 page presentation said: “As you all are aware, what necessitated this
public hearing were the events that followed a
false and malicious online publication that I had
compelled the NCAA to purchase for me 2 nos
BMW bullet proof cars at the cost of
$1.6million. ” “Let me state emphatically that from the onset
that the allegation concerning the purchase of
the 2 nos bullet proof cars for me by the NCAA
is false in its entirety. ”
After reading her presentation, Rep Zakari
Lafia Mohammed asked her whether it is a loan or lease that her agency obtained from FBN,
she said it is the same. She said the money
NCAA would pay would still be below the
N240million at the end of the year. On whether she acted within the ambit of the
law in giving approval beyond N100 million , she
said she approved the money and asked the
NCAA to do the needfull. What is the needfull?
The Committee and the minister disagreed on
what do the needfull meant. She had claimed that in her approval she said
kindly do the needfull. Rep Mohammed took on her that saying the
needfull means a go ahead to implement. Responding, Oduah said”no you are wrong on
that the needfull does not mean full approval. ” The NCAA DG Folu Akinkuotu was asked
whether he did the needfull, he said he was not
In-charge at NCAA when the order was given
for the purchase. The permanent secretary of the Ministry,
George Ossi was tackled for misleading the
minister by not appropriately advising her. The committee said the permanent secretary
ought to have asked the NCAA to do the right
thing. The PS claimed that due diligence ought to
have been done by the agency before applying
for the approval. He claimed that he was not available at the
time everything happened . The DG said he would have followed the
procurement Act if he were the one the
directive was given to do the needfull. He said the acting DG Joyce Daniel
Nkemakolam ought to explain why he did not
do that. Nkemakolam said we interpreted the directive
to mean to go through it in line with the
procurement Act. He said they did the due
diligence but they had a mindset that they were
within the budget limit.
But he was asked why he didn’t do due diligence to ensure that it was in tandem with
the procurement law, he said he thought since
the agency had got the approval of the National
Assembly there was no need for such
diligence.
He was asked why he initiated a memo to approve 54 vehicles when what the National
assembly approved was 25 vehicles. He was reminded that what was approved was
N240million and not N643million. NCAA was asked whether the board sought
approval of the president to approve the car
loan. Nkemakolam said he was working on the
mindset that they were still within the
approved limit.
He said that what NCAA discussed with First bank was a lease. He was asked the date the
board of NCAA approved the loan facility.
The DG was asked how many trainings did he
organise for NCAA staff , he said he relied on
experts.
He said that his mindset has always being that they did not exceed the amount approved.
He was asked whether the NCAA board
approved the money.
He said the NCAA has interim board. He said
that he was working on account that it was a
lease not loan. The drama continued with Rep Manwe asking
the former DG of NCAA to disclose who uses
the controversial bullet proof cars since the
Minister bluntly confessed that they were not
bought for her use. “Who is using the vehicles now since the
Minister said they were not purchased for
her?” he asked. To the DG, that was one question that got him
jolted. Minutes passed before he could provide
an answer. And when he finally found his voice,
he said “Anybody can use the vehicles when
they are in the pool. They are operational
vehicles.” But the Lawmaker wouldn’t give up. He
continued with a rider to the question. “Do you mean that a messenger or cleaner in
the agency can use the cars?” He asked.
At this juncture, the hearing room became
deadened in silence with the DG losing his
voice for the second time. And when again, he found it, he answered this
way: “those categories of vehicles are for VIPs
which include the Minister, including you, the
Honorable.” Just then a blast of laughter erupted in the hall
which to some extent provided some comic
relief to everyone in the hall. But Rep Manwe wouldn’t stop. He asked again,
“can we have the log book of the movement of
the car?
With a subdued babbling voice which came in
separate minutes, the DG answered ” I am not a
transport officer. I don’t know whether they are still keeping those log books.” When it now became obvious that the DG was
exhaustive of all the answers he had, the
Lawmakers mandated the agency to bring the
man who received the vehicles at the point of
delivery by Coscharis Motors.
With that, the hearing came to a close. In her closing remark, the chairperson,
Onyejeocha assured Nigerians that justice
would be done to the report of the hearing. “Fact speak for itself. We have tried to listen to
people: Coscharis, the Minister, NCAA, First
Bank , BPP and Customs, and we have their
submissions with us. We will consider what we
have whether it is in line with the extant laws
and financial regulations. We assure everyone and all Nigerian that we
will do justice to this hearing,” Onyejeocha
said. Speaking with some Journalists shortly after
the hearing, the Minister, Oduah expressed
gratitude to the National Assembly for giving
her an opportunity to present her own side of
the story.

Kidnapped Polish photographer escape from captors

A Polish photojournalist
kidnapped in Syria in July is safely back home
after escaping his captors, Poland’s foreign
ministry said Thursday. Polish officials did not reveal how Marcin Suder
was able to flee or give details of his time in
captivity, saying only that he has been back in
Poland for “some days”. Suder’s mother told Polish radio he had been
held in a dark basement before his escape. “Marcin Suder is already back home,” Foreign
Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on his official
Twitter account. “He was very lucky, he managed to escape,”
foreign ministry spokesman Marcin
Wojciechowski told AFP. He added: “He’s here since some days,
surrounded by his family. He is in good health.” Masked gunmen abducted the 34-year-old
freelancer, who worked for the Corbis agency
and other outlets, on July 24 during a raid on a
media centre in Saraqeb in the northwestern
province of Idlib. No reason was given for his kidnapping and no
one publicly claimed responsibility for the
abduction. “Polish consular services in the region helped
the photographer return home,” Wojciechowski
told reporters. “We also want to thank the (Polish) defence
ministry for ensuring his air transport from
Turkey to Poland.” Suder’s mother said her son was in shock but
otherwise mentally fine. “Physically, he’s thin and, let’s say, some marks
of something remain on his body. But he really
doesn’t look that bad,” Krystyna Jarosz told
Poland’s commercial RMF FM radio. Without explaining the marks, she said he was
held in a dark basement, without food at first:
“Later he got a bit of food. It wasn’t a spa, I’ll
put it that way.” Press watchdog Reporters Without Borders
says Syria is the most dangerous country for
media to work in, with around 15 foreign
journalists still missing or held hostage there. At least 25 professional journalists and 70
citizen journalists have been killed since the
start of the Syrian revolt in March 2011, it said.

Niger holds world’s highest childhood pregnancy rate, says UN

The 20,000 girls below the age of 18
who give birth every day in developing
countries make them and the countries they
live in to face economic disadvantages, a UN
report said on Wednesday. The report said that it made them face much
higher health risks than older mothers. Every year, 7.3 million children become
mothers in developing countries, the UN
Population Fund (UNFPA), said in its annual
report that was launched in several cities,
including Geneva. Some 70,000 mothers between 15 and 19 die
from complications after birth each year. Having children at a young age prevents girls
from entering the work force. If girls waited until the age of 20 before having
babies, the gross annual income would be
boosted by more than 7.7 billion dollars in India
and 3.5 billion dollars in Brazil, the report
found. At the same time UNFPA chief Babatunde
Osotimehin stressed that poverty was an
important cause of childhood pregnancies,
along with discrimination against women. “Too often, society blames only the girl for
getting pregnant,’’ he said. “The reality is that adolescent pregnancy is
most often not the result of a deliberate
choice, but rather the absence of choices, and
of circumstances beyond a girl’s control.” The report said Niger had the world’s highest
childhood pregnancy rate, with 51 per cent of
women in their 20s reporting that they gave
birth before turning 18. In Asia, Bangladesh has the highest rate at 40
per cent. In other regions, Nicaragua holds the record in
Latin America at 28 per cent and Yemen in the
Middle East at 25 per cent. The U.S. accounts for half of the annual
680,000 teenage pregnancies in industrialised
countries, the UNFPA said.(dpa/NAN)

Syria has destroyed chemical facilities – watchdog

Syria has destroyed all of its declared
chemical weapons production and mixing
facilities, meeting a major deadline in an
ambitious disarmament programme, the
international chemical weapons watchdog said. The Organisation for the Prohibition of
Chemical Weapons said in the document its
teams had inspected 21 out of 23 chemical
weapons sites across the country. The other two were too dangerous to inspect
but the chemical equipment had already been
moved to other sites which experts had visited,
it said. “The OPCW is satisfied it has verified, and seen
destroyed, all declared critical production/
mixing/filling equipment from all 23 sites,’’ the
document said. Under a Russian-American brokered deal,
Damascus agreed to destroy all its chemical
weapons after Washington threatened to use
force in response to the killing of hundreds of
people in a sarin attack on the outskirts of
Damascus on Aug. 21. The U.S. and its allies blamed Assad’s forces
for the attack and several earlier incidents. The Syrian president has rejected the charge,
blaming rebel brigades. Under the disarmament timetable, Syria was
due to render unusable all production and
chemical weapons filling facilities by Nov. 1 – a
target it has now met. By mid-2014 it must have destroyed its entire
stockpile of chemical weapons. (Reuters/NAN)

Lawson steps down as Ecobank chairman

Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, ETI,
yesterday, said its chairman, Mr. Kolapo
Lawson, will step aside from the bank with
immediate effect, while he is expected to
retire from the Board of Directors by
December 31, 2013. This was even as the Securities and Exchange
Commission, SEC, said its investigation into the
alleged breach of corporate governance in the
bank is still ongoing, despite the stepping down
of Lawson. SEC, in a statement yesterday, said, “In the
face of persistent inquiries from domestic and
foreign investors and stakeholders, we wish to
state that the ongoing investigation of
allegations of corporate governance breaches
at ETI has not been concluded because of the announcement by ETI that Mr. Kolapo Lawson
will be stepping down as Chairman. “In line with its investor protection mandate
therefore, SEC wishes to inform the investing
public that the investigation being carried out
by SEC complimented by KPMG Professional
Services is progressing satisfactorily.” Ecobank, in a statement signed by Nabi
Ouedraogo, Head, Media Relations, Group
Communications, ETI, said Lawson will hand
over to André Siaka as interim Chairman with
immediate effect Speaking on behalf of the Board, Mr. Siaka, the
newly appointed Interim Chairman said, “Kolapo
Lawson has been a loyal servant of Ecobank for
very many years and has played a major part in
shaping the successful organisation we know
today. “His family is inseparable from Ecobank and
Kolapo’s contribution to Ecobank is second to
none. Over 20 years, as a director of Ecobank
Nigeria, Ecobank Togo and ETI, he has made a
truly outstanding contribution to this great
pan-African company. He has our very sincere thanks for all of his hard work and
commitment, his leadership and his good
works.” Kolapo said his decision to step down from the
Board is hinged on the need to allow for proper
investigation of the issue and to ensure that
the issue is resolved amicably. He said, “The last few months have seen huge
pressure on the organisation, and on me
personally, in the media. These have
culminated in allegations, which are untrue,
made to the Nigerian Security and Exchange
Commission, SEC, on issues of corporate governance. During this time, I led constructive
discussions on the need for independent
review of these allegations. “The board has now taken the necessary
decisions to appoint independent parties who, I
am confident will investigate these allegations
and review our corporate governance with the
utmost professionalism. “In order to give total
credibility to these reviews, I have decided it would not be appropriate for me to be the
person leading this process. The Board has
assured me of its commitment to seeing these
investigations through and I will continue to
monitor this as an interested party. “I am very conscious of the uncertainty that
current media speculation has cast over the
institution. I therefore wish to take the
necessary steps to bring this to an end. “As the head of such a respected global
institution, I must act when there is even the
slightest perception that the interests of that
institution might be at risk. I therefore step
aside as Chairman of Ecobank Transnational.” The Public Investment Corporation, the biggest
shareholder in ETI, had in July, urged the bank
to resolve a dispute involving businesses
associated with Chairman Kolapo Lawson. The PIC had noted that it has written a
confidential letter to the Board of Directors,
requesting the Board to quickly find time and
space to discuss the matter and resolve it
properly. Mr. Daniel Matjila, Chief Investment Officer,
PIC, however, said the bank did not ask that the
chairman be replaced.

6 yr-old burnt to death in Lagos fire

A six-year-old boy was burnt to death in a fire
that engulfed a building in Iyana-Ifako area of
Gbagada Lagos, Tuesday night. The deceased, identified simply as Abbey, was
said to have been sleeping when the incident
occurred. Two of his elder brothers were said to have
been rescued by sympathisers. The fire
affected 10 rooms in the building located at 3,
Ogunde Street, off Somori, Iyana-Ifako. The cause of the fire, said to have started at
9p.m., could not be ascertained. While occupants of the buildings scampered
from their respective apartments for safety,
eyewitnesses said shouts for help from some
children in one of the rooms were heard. Some of the sympathisers said to have gone
for rescue mission, discovered that the door
was locked. One of the eyewitnesses said: “Their parents
locked them inside and went out. Nobody knew
where they went to. The door was forced
opened and two of them rescued, though one
of them was slightly burnt. “It was while they got outside that the rescued
children said their brother was still inside. By
then the fire had engulfed the whole building
and nobody could go in again.” The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr.
Rasaq Fadipe, said fire trucks from Ilupeju and
Ikeja responded to the distress call. He said the
charred remains of the six-year-old boy was
recovered.

28-yr-old jail-breaker, 2 others arrested

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested
28-year-old Kingsley Chibuzor, who escaped
from the Kirikiri Medium Prison in 2011, for
armed robbery. Chibuzor and two other members of his gang,
Prince Nwafor and Ozor Enebeli, who
specialised in car snatching, were arrested by
operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad,
SARS, led by Superintendent of Police Abba
Kyari. Four exotic vehicles, including a Toyota FJ
Cruiser, and three locally made guns were
recovered from them. Sources at SARS disclosed that Kingsley, who
was a commercial bus driver in 2011, was
arrested for malicious damage by the Police at
Orile Police Station and was charged to court
and remanded in prison. Few weeks after he was remanded, he
managed to escape and formed a robbery gang
that terrorised Lagos, Ebony, Delta and
Anambra states, snatching more than 15 exotic
cars. A source, who spoke with Vanguard on the
condition of anonymity, said SARS operatives
intercepted an intelligence report on the
gang’s activities and tracked them across
various states in the country. The source said two notorious stolen vehicle
receivers (names withheld) one of them a
popular car dealer in Ebonyi State, were also
arrested. The source said Kingsley provided information
that led to the arrest of others and the
subsequent recovery of four of the stolen
vehicles. ‘Why we rob’ When Vanguard interacted with the suspects,
Kingsley said he went into armed robbery after
escaping from prison because he was broke
and frustrated. Ozor confessed that poverty led him into
robbery, but that he regretted his arrest since
he had turned a new leaf and started a new life
in Ghana. Kingsley said: “I formed the gang after I
escaped from Kirikiri Prison. I and Ozor were
friends. We met in a beer parlour at Maza Maza
area and we became very friendly. “When the idea of taking to armed robbery
came, I went to Benin Republic to buy two guns
which we used in operating. “We robbed people of several vehicles in
Onitsha and we did several bad things. But my
happiness is that I gave my life to Christ when I
was arrested.” On how he escaped from prison, Kingsley said:
“On that night, I discovered that the warder
that used to lock our cell left it open and by
midnight when everyone was sleeping I went to
the gate and pushed it open. “I walked to the entrance, but the gate was
locked. I went through the ceiling and jumped
outside. There was no one on guard. “Then I walked swiftly to the fence and jumped
over it. I travelled to my village the next day
and after a while I returned to Lagos and
formed a robbery gang.”

EFCC nabs fake ACP

Days after he was arrested for presenting
himself to the Director-General of the Nigeria
Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC,
claiming he had been assigned to discreetly
investigate staff of the corporation, the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, arraigned one Kunle Adeshola,
a fake Assistant Commissioner of Police, who
also claimed to hold a doctorate degree from
the University of Jos, before Justice Hussain
Baba of the FCT High Court, Maitama, Abuja. He was docked on a 7-count charge bordering
on impersonation, forgery and obtaining under
false pretence. The accused pleaded not guilty, when the
charge was read to him, prompting the
prosecution counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, to ask for
a trial date, while urging the court to remand
the accused person in prison custody. However, the defence counsel, Yemi Akinseye,
prayed the court to admit the accused person
to bail, stressing that the charges preferred
against him are bailable. He assured that the accused will be available to
face his trial. One of the charges read: “That you Kunle
Adeshola, male, sometimes between May and
October, 2013 in Abuja, falsely pretended to
hold the office of an operative of the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission with staff
identity card no. EFCC: 073, as a public servant. “In such assumed character held out yourself
to the Director-General and staff of the
Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation
under colour of such office and thereby
committed an offence punishable under
Section 132 of the Penal Code Cap. 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990.” Justice Baba granted the accused bail in the
sum of two million naira, a surety in like sum,
who must be a civil servant of the rank of
deputy director in the federal service, and
resident in Abuja. The accused person is to be remanded in
prison custody until he perfects the bail terms.
The case was adjourned till November 29 for
hearing.

Nigeria spends $13bn on peace-keeping – Ex- Polish envoy

FORMER Polish Ambassador to
Nigeria, Grezgorz Walinski has said that Nigeria
has spent about $13 billion on peacekeeping
operations since 1960 and has also sent over
250,000 members of the Nigerian armed
forces to the United Nation’s sponsored missions worldwide. Ambassador Walinski disclosed this at the
stakeholders’ dinner reception for the Nigeria
Security Exhibition and Conference, 2014,
organised by First Security Guards Limited in
Abuja. He noted that despite the numerous
contributions of the country in peace
operations, it was assumed that the country
had not taken full advantage of its active
participation in the numerous peace operations
around the world by not getting commensurate economic, military and political remuneration
for its participation. He cited countries like Ghana that had also
participated in numerous UN PSOs but
generated funds through the process to defray
the costs of sustaining its military, while
Nigeria on the other hand had largely allegedly
deprived itself of such benefits. According to him, the country started
peacekeeping operations few days after her
independence in 1960 in Congo and since then,
the country’s forces have participated in many
operations across the globe under varying
international legal authority executing a variety of operational mandates. He said: “Her contribution to the UN
peacekeeping operations is only surpassed by
those of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Over
250,000 members of the Nigerian armed
forces have participated in UN sponsored
missions worldwide.” “Having been involved in 40 of the 55
peacekeeping missions of the UN, Nigeria has
now participated in 73 percent of all UN
peacekeeping operations. Four of these
missions have been commanded by Nigeria
senior military officers. Nigeria currently has about 6, 000 peacekeepers in various
flashpoints, 4, 000 of which are in Darfur,
Sudan,” he stated. The former Polish Ambassador to Nigeria
further said that many potential conflicts were
effectively prevented due to Nigerian
diplomacy. Therefore, Nigeria’s direct
involvement as chief mediator in a number of
territorial disputes and crises effectively allowed to avoid them and in consequence
eliminated the threat of their development into
full-scale conflicts. Ambassador Walinski noted that the
international community was getting fatigued
and increasingly reluctant to intervene in
Africa’s conflicts, adding, “During last two
decades, we witnessed gradual but inevitable
shift from foreign intervention carried on by European military contingents to
establishments and strengthening of Africa’s
own capability to prevent, to monitor and to
resolve crises which inevitably will erupt.” He said that the country was faced with
myriads of security challenges but added that
the “Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor
Viola Onwuliri has assured the international
community that Nigeria would continue to work
in the area of preventive diplomacy.” He said the main problem of the country was
terrorism, though it would not change the
country’s position as regional leader, stressing
that the country had always succeeded in
learning from her experiences and making her
experiences the source of even greater power. He also said that the idea of organizing the
security exhibition at the FCT was important as
it served as a forum where all actors both state
and private sectors and those that have the
right to use power and those who can supply
them with the products would come together and discuss security matters and also proffer
solutions. Speaking earlier, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of First Security Guards who also is the
chief organizer of NISEC, 2014, Frank Ohwafa
said the reception was organized to bring
together all stakeholders in preparation for the
2014 Nigeria Security Exhibition and Conference, NISEC, homeland security show. Ohwafa said First Security Guards had in the
past collaborated with other security agencies
in areas of capacity building and competence
needed in an ever changing environment to
fight and combat crime and criminality. “In year 2007, First Security Guards signed a
partnership with the Nigeria Police to train and
retrain her personnel in contemporary policing
and crime fighting,” he stated and commended
the National Security Adviser for using his
office and appointment to promote peace and security, enduring lasting security platforms
for better coordination of the security
agencies.

25 arrested as Okada men fight in court premises

The Ogun State Police Command
has arrested 25 commercial motorcyclists,
popularly known as okada, in connection with
violent clash at the premises of the Federal
High Court, Abeokuta, where dozens of people were severely injured. The warring members of the Amalgamated
Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders
Association, ACOMORAN, in the state had
gathered in the court over a suit filed by the
former Secretary of the association, Lateef
Yekini, challenging his alleged detention sometime ago by the association’s Chairman,
Alhaji Shamsudeen Apelogun. However, shortly after the case was adjourned
by the presiding judge to December 3, the
association’s members began to fight at the
court premises, leaving the state ACOMORAN
Treasurer, Razaq Sotayo, critically injured. An eyewitness told Vanguard that the
hoodlums freely used dangerous weapons,
including guns and machetes, forcing many
people in the area to scamper for safety. It was gathered that the sporadic gunshots of
the okada men attracted the attention of
security agents from the military, Police,
Department of State Services, DSS and Nigeria
Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, who
restored normalcy after some of the fighters were apprehended. Confirming the incident, the state Acting Police
Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abimbola
Oyeyemi, disclosed that no fewer than 25
suspects had been arrested in connection with
the fracas. Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of
Police, said normalcy had already been restored
and that the suspects would face prosecution. He said: “Currently, about 25 hoodlums were
arrested and they are undergoing interrogation.
They are going to be screened. Those who were
not part of the fracas will be definitely
released. “But those who perpetrated the act are going
to be prosecuted at the law court. Few people
sustained injuries, but I cannot confirm their
number at the moment. “Our own concern is to bring the situation
under control and make sure those who
perpetrated the act are dealt with according to
the law.” Meantime, the Apelogun group had accused
the former Secretary of inviting security
agents into the matter. Apelogun, who spoke with newsmen, absolved
himself from the fracas, saying it was the
former Secretary that mobilised armed
hoodlums from Ibadan and some neighbouring
towns to cause crisis. He said: “The former secretary was facing
criminal charge at the Magistrate’s Court over
embezzlement. He later sued me for unlawful
detention, even though I’m not a security
agent. “Today (yesterday), the presiding judge asked
us to bring all our trustees to court.”

set piece against Sevilla, which he duly scored from Cristiano Ronaldo shunned his free kick duties in favour of Gareth Bale, who stepped up and fired his and Real Madrid's second goal against Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. The Welshman had put the capital club into a
13th-mintue lead, collecting a Karim Benzema
pass before curling into the top corner beyond
goalkeeper Beto from the edge of the area. Ronaldo then stood aside to let the world's
most expensive footballer - bought by the
Blancos for €100 million in the summer - give
Carlo Ancelotti's men a 2-0 cushion from a dead ball situation on 27 minutes, via a deflection in the wall. However, the Portuguese winger would not be
as generous with sharing responsibilities for a
second time, though, as the No.7 smashed
home the Blancos' third from the penalty spot,
denying Bale the opportunity to bag his first hat-trick since joining the club. The former Tottenham player also had a hand
in the fourth, which put Madrid 4-2 up, cutting
in a ball from the right flank for Benzema to
finish.

Nigeria threatens Iran over age comment

Golden Eaglets Coach Manu Garba has threatened to lodge a formal complaint against Iranian coach Ali Doustimehr for insinuating that the Nigerians were playing with players over the age of 17 at the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup here in the United Arab Emirates.

The Eaglets have been in scintillating form, where they have netted 18 goals in four matches, the latest being a 4-1 thrashing of Iran on Tuesday in a round of 16 match at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium.
Mesmerized with the Eaglets strong show, the Iranian coach, Ali Doustimehr,  made a subtle remark, casting doubts over the true ages of the Nigerians and responding to the jibe, Coach Garba said that his players here passed all the MRI tests conducted by CAF and FIFA, prior to the African U-17 tournament and ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Coach Garba said that “we are going to officially take it up with the Iranian coach if he does not take back his words. Back in January before the CAF U-17 tournament, a memo was sent to us that all the players were going to do MRI tests for the wrist bones and we did.
“A month before we came here, another test was done by FIFA for all the players and the ones here passed. So I do not know what he is talking about”, Garba wondered.

No-Work-No-Pay rule may escalate crisis – ASUU

The Delta State University Chapter of
the Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) on Wednesday warned that
implementing the No-Work-No-Pay policy
would worsen the industrial crisis in public
universities. The Chairman of the chapter, Dr Emmanuel
Mordi, said in Asaba that the state government
was planning to implement the policy for the
first time. NAN reports that the state Governor, Dr
Emmanuel Uduaghan, had urged ASUU
members to return to classroom or face
implementation of the policy. “When the strike is called off, lecturers will say:
`No pay, no work’. It does not help anybody; it
can only escalate the crisis. “It is unfortunate that ASUU is at the receiving
end, as the government, being stronger, has
the power to withhold ASUU members’ salaries,
he said. He said that ASUU was willing to call off the
strike and would do so as soon as the Federal
Government showed more commitment. “We are anxious to call off the strike, but the
government said we should wait for so many
months. “What we must note is that our students are
also our children. Some lecturers are also
students; so, this is a very painful surgical
operation, which we have to carry out in the
best interest of our future generation.” Also the Adamawa chapter of the Christian
Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Wednesday
said the lingering strike by university teachers
in the country could destroy the nation’s
tertiary education. The Chairman of the association, Rev. Moses
Taparki, in an interview in Yola, expressed
displeasure over the inability of the Federal
Government and the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) to resolve the issues. Describing the situation as “unfortunate”, he
said it had lingered in spite of appeals and
interventions by groups and individuals, and
blamed the government and the union for their
seeming “insensitivity” to the issue. The cleric said the damage the strike had done
to the university system in the country in the
past four months would take several years to
redress. “The government and ASUU should take
responsibility for the sad development. Many
groups and individuals, including religious
leaders and traditional rulers, have appealed to
them but all have been in vain,” he said. “For the rigid positions the government and the
university teachers have maintained on the
matter, I maintain that both parties must take
full responsibility for the damage the strike
has done to the system,” he stressed.

INEC begins distribution of ‘non-sensitive’ materials in Anambra

The Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, has said that the
commission had commenced the movement of
non-sensitive electoral materials to Anambra. This was even as Vanguard learnt that there
was apprehension in Awka, the Anambra State
capital that the election might be botched as
whatever becomes of the result would be
challenged since INEC breached some sections
of the electoral law by failing to display the voters’ registers not later than 30 days before
the election. INEC National Commissioner, Professor Lai
Olurode told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN,
in Abuja that with this early movement of
materials, the commission was re-assessing its
operational strategy to ensure a hitch-free
governorship election on November 16. He said sensitive materials would be moved
from the commission’s headquarters a week to
the election. Olurode said that the commission had put in
place various strategies to ensure a hitch-free
election.

Ghana arrests 47 illegal Chinese, Indian miners

Ghana’s Presidential Task Force on
Illegal Mining has arrested some 47 illegal
miners at Dunkwa-on-Offin in the country’s
central region, an official has said. Mr Samuel Sarpong, the Central Regional
Minister and leader of the team was quoted by
Ghana’s newspaper, the Ghanaian Times as
saying this when he spoke to newsmen on
Wednesday in Accra. He said that those arrested included Chinese
and Indian nationals following a search by the
task force around the country. “The task force also destroyed 13 locally made
machines belonging to some of the miners at
two different locations. “At Kyekyewere, some of the illegal miners
took to their heels and crossed the Offin river
upon seeing the team,’’ he said. Sarpong said that the mandate of the task
force was to stamp out the activities of illegal
miners across the country. He said that the activities of illegal miners had
destroyed water bodies in the country including
the Pra and Offin Rivers. “The situation is so severe that efforts must
be made to protect the land and water bodies
from total destruction,’’ he said. The newspaper also quoted Ransford Ninson,
the Central Regional Police Commander, as
saying that the police was ready to support the
task force in carrying out its mandate. He said that the exercise would be sustained in
to protect all water bodies and land in the
mining regions of the country. (NAN)

Zamfara Lead Poisoning: 29 communities yet to be de-contaminated

Only eight of the 37 communities
affected by lead poisoning in Zamfara have been
remediated with 29 villages still awaiting
decontamination in their areas. Alhaji Shehu Anka, the state Director,
Environmental Protection Control, said this in
Gusau while speaking at a one day stakeholders
meeting on Bagega’s remediation. The remediation process entailed the removal of
the contaminated soil and its replacement with
fresh unpolluted one. The Gusau meeting was organised by Global
Rights, an NGO. Anka blamed the non-remediation of the 29
villages on the retrieval of the decontamination
equipment, including soil test machines and
vehicles by the Federal Ministry of Environment
after the exercise was concluded in Bagega town. He wondered why the equipment needed in the
remediation sites was taken away by the Federal
Ministry of Environment. Speaking at the meeting, Mrs Nicole Langer , the
Project Coordinator, Medicins Sans Frontieres
(MSF), otherwise known as Doctors without
Borders, said that the mortality rate had reduced
from 43 per cent as of 2010 to 3.2 per cent up to
Sept. 2013. Langer said that 4,484 children had been
registered by MSF since the beginning of the
programme. She said 1,596 patients were treated and
discharged successfully while about 1,905
patients were receiving treatment and follow-up
procedure. The coordinator further said that, the MSF was
now giving medical attention to cases like
measles, malaria and malnutrition. Also speaking, the Senior Programme Officer of
the Global Rights, Mr Adebayo Okeowo said the
meeting was organised in order to discuss with
stakeholders on the impact of remediation, after
the exercise was completed at Bagega. (NAN)

Aviation crisis: Oduah linked with new cars’ scandal

The Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah
who has been in the news over the
purchase of N255 bullet-proof cars has
been linked to another transaction scandal. Oduah has again been strongly linked to
the approval of the purchase of two Lexus
Limousine cars and two Toyota Prado jeeps. The Minister who has been given till
Wednesday (today) to appear before the
House Committee on Aviation which is
currently investigating the purchase of the
two BMW bullet-proof cars may risk arrest if
she fails to honour the House’s invitation. However, during the sitting by the Senate
Committee on Aviation which is probing the
crisis in the Aviation industry, the Managing
Director of the Federal Airports Authority of
Nigeria , Mr. George Uriesi, had disclosed
that the Lexus Limousine cars and Toyota Prado jeeps were still with an unnamed
bank. Having disclosed
that the limousines
were bought for
N60m each , Uriesi
denied having
details of the cost of the Prado jeeps. He had disclosed
further an
unnamed bank
that financed the
purchase of the
vehicles, hence he had no full details. The FAAN boss
further explained
that though the
Aviation Minister
gave the approval,
someone whom he did not mention
signed on his
(Uriesi) behalf. Chairman of the
Senate Committee on Aviation, Mr. Hope
Uzodinma, had vehemently blamed him for
receiving approval from the Minister and
not from the Federal Executive Council. He was finally asked to appear before the
House with all documents relating to the
transaction on Monday for further
investigation. The panel is expected to also inspect the
N255m bullet-proof cars parked at the

Balotelli’s agent says he could move to Chelsea

Mario Balotelli’s agent, Mino Raiola, has
hinted that the AC Milan striker could
reunite with former boss Jose Mourinho at
Chelsea. The pair worked together at Inter Milan,
where they clashed severally. But Raiola
insists they have repaired their relationship
and the former Manchester City man could
return to England. “Balotelli and Mourinho
could be reunited
because they know each other and they
didn’t leave each other with hate,” Raiola
told The Sun. “There was a not very nice incident between
them, but they parted company on good
terms. They have remained in contact and
there is mutual respect. “I know Milan vice-president Adriano
Galliani will not agree, but Mario is a great
striker that is for certain, and he could
perhaps be that at Chelsea.”

Wenger: Defensive mistakes costly in Capital One Cup exit

Wenger: Defensive mistakes costly in Capital One Cup exit

The Frenchman believes the loss to Chelsea was the result of errors made by his players at key moments, but insists they will respond against Liverpool

Arsene Wenger was left to rue defensive errors from his Arsenal side as they crashed out of the Capital One Cup at home to London rivals Chelsea.
Wenger has now failed to beat a Blues side managed by Jose Mourinho in nine attempts after a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
Azpilicueta's opener came as a result of a mistake from right-back Carl Jenkinson, who failed to get enough on an attempted header back to Lukasz Fabianski that allowed the Spanish full-back to nip in apply the finish.Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first goal for Chelsea and Juan Mata got off the mark for the season as Mourinho's charges secured a deserved win to move into the last eight.
Wenger made eight changes to the side that beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday and, although Mourinho made 10 alternations to his starting line-up, Chelsea were still able to field an experienced side.
The Arsenal boss felt his team paid the price for being naive, but backed his players to put their cup exit behind them when they face Livepool in the Premier League on Saturday.
Wenger said: "I think it was a very tight game that was decided by one or two mistakes.
"We were a bit naive in some situations. We gave them a chance to counter-attack when we went 1-0 down and we didn't create many chances ourselves.
"We have to respond well against Liverpool on Saturday because we are in a strong position in the league
"Let's not go too quickly to conclusions because we have taken more points than anybody since January."

Firefox moves up to Version 25, fixes a bunch of memory mismanagement problems

A brief reminder for Firefox users: version 25 is out.
As usual, there are some new and tweaked features, plus a fair number of security fixes.
And, as usual, Mozilla recommends your immediate attention to the update, if you're one of those who prefers to be alerted to updates first rather than having them automatically applied:

It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible.
There are actually four updated software versions in the Mozilla stable that have received the security patches from the latest upgrade:
  • Firefox 24.0 goes to 25.0.
  • Firefox 24.0ESR (Extended Support Release) goes to 24.1ESR
  • Firefox 17.0.9ESR goes to 17.0.10ESR.
  • Thunderbird goes to 24.1.
The Seamonkey application suite is also listed as getting the fixes, moving to 2.22, but it looks as though Seamonkey users may have to wait, as the official download page [at 2013-10-30T05:45Z] still offers 2.21.
Tor Browser users will also need to keep their eye on the progress of updates, as the Firefox ESR version that ships in the Tor Browser Bundle is still at 17.0.9.

Five of the security advisories are marked in red, meaning they're critical, and can therefore possibly, or even probably, be used for implanting malware via Remote Code Execution (RCE).
All of the critical fixes involve memory mismanagement errors such as use-after-free bugs: if you're interested in the potential implications of this sort of programming flaw, you might want to check out our Anatomy of an IE Exploit series.
There are two official changes listed for Firefox 25, and both caught my eye, as they have to do with the Firefox Reset feature:

Resetting Firefox is a not-very-well-known option you can try when websites stop working properly, perhaps because of accumulated state information about your browsing so far. (So much for HTTP being a so-called stateless protocol where each request stands entirely on its own.)
If you browse to the URL about:support, you'll see the reset option:

As the change list reminds us quite clearly, a Firefox reset doesn't set you back to a state of total browsing innocence, and in Firefox 25, it seems that slightly less than before is deleted from the browser's store of information.
In particular, the reset function no longer forces an end to any current browser sessions, meaning that it leaves behind a fair amount of data about your current browser state.
Do bear this in mind, especially if you also use Safari, where the Reset option can be used to remove all browser data, effectively logging you out, removing all tracking cookies, and more.
The equivalent option in Firefox isn't Reset, but rather Clear All History, which you reach from the History|Clear Recent History menu option.
Now grab the update, and shield yourself from any potential attacks that might be found against those use-after-free bugs!

76-yr-old woman escapes from kidnappers den

MRS. Otiti Esegba, a 76 year-old
grandmother, escaped from the den of her
abductors about five hours after she was
abducted, Monday. She was abducted at 2a.m. by a five-man kidnap
gang at Akperhe community in Olomu kingdom,
Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta
State and taken away on a motorcycle to their den
at Oviri Olomu. Mrs. Esegba is the mother of the Managing
Director of Ben-Segba Technical Services Limited,
an oil servicing firm in Ekpan.

Same day, a medical practitioner, Dr. Richard Kofi,
a native of Okpare community, also in Olomu
kingdom was seized as he was entering his clinic
in Ughelli. He also escaped from his kidnappers. Prior to the Esegba and Kofi episodes, a lawyer,
Mr. Omonemu, was kidnapped by the gang and
kept for 20 days before he regained freedom. Mrs. Esegba, whose pleas to the kidnappers to
free her fell on deaf ears, said she began to pray
that God should make the two kidnappers
guarding her to fall asleep. She said they actually
fell asleep. That was when she ran. The other three had left to go and abduct more
victims, saying they needed more money. She told Vanguard: “At about 2a.m., while I was
asleep, I heard a deafening noise but before I
knew it, two heavily armed men stormed into the
house and seized me after pulling down my door. “Three others, also armed, joined them and
ransacked the house, took my jewelries, my
clothes and money. They started beating and
hitting me with guns. “Thereafter, I was dragged onto one of the
waiting motorcycles, popularly known as okada.
One sat behind me and the three others took the
other okada. The one seated behind me held my
mouth and I was blind-folded.” When she escaped, a fisherman took her in. She said: “He took me to his home at a place I
later found out to be Oviri-Olomu, after hearing
my story. “At his home I found out that he was married to
my niece. They clothed me as I was almost
naked.” “This man called my people at Akperhe at 6a.m.
They came and alerted Oviri community
leadership. That is my story.”

World Bank ranks Nigeria 122nd best place for business

The World Bank has ranked Nigeria 147th among
the best places for doing business. It also ranked
the country as the 122nd for best countries to
start a business. The report released, yesterday, said Nigeria’s low
ranking is mainly caused by electricity problems,
where the country is ranked 185th out of 189
countries evaluated. The first African country on
the list is Rwanda, ranked 32nd. The report said in Africa, 66 per cent of countries
enacted at least one reform last year, against 33
per cent in 2005, adding that nine African
countries make up the top 20 most improved in
terms of business regulations since 2009: Benin,
Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Togo. The report said economies are ranked on their
ease of doing business, from 1 – 189. A high
ranking on the ease of doing business index
means the regulatory environment is more
conducive to the starting and operation of a local
firm. This index averages the country’s percentile
rankings on 10 topics, made up of a variety of
indicators, giving equal weight to each topic. The
rankings for all economies are bench-marked to
June 2013.

N255m armoured car scandal: House C’ttee continues hearing today

THE House committee on Aviation
investigative hearing on alleged purchase of
N255million bullet proof cars by the Minister of
Aviation continues today amidst doubts that
Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah will honour the summons asking her to appear before
the committee today. A member of the committee and spokesman of
the House, Zakari Mohammed told Vanguard,
yesterday, that “the hearing must continue and
must be concluded within the stipulated one
week that the House gave us. “We gave the minister enough time to re-align
her travel schedules to enable her show up
today.” It will be recalled that Oduah had written a letter
dated October 25 asking the committee to shift
the date of her appearance to November 4. The committee too had countered her letter
insisting that she must appear today. All seems set for the final phase of the
investigative hearing fixed for today. Chairperson, House Committee on Aviation,
Nkeuruka Onyejeocha, weekend, said the
investigative hearing on the alleged purchase of
N255million bullet proof cars by the Minister of
Aviation, Stella Oduah would be suspended till
she comes back from Israel. Onyejeocha said the “essence of our suspending
the probe pending when she comes is to ensure
that she gets a fair hearing. The truth is that you
cannot try somebody in her absence and get a
clearer picture of what transpired. “We will not seat till on Wednesday by then the
Minister must have concluded all her transactions
in Israel.”

the eclipse. He assured that it will not affect signal from the
stationary satellites which means that mobile

For still photography, Gundotra showed off new tools that allow users to merge multiple pictures of a person in different parts of the frame into a single image or an animated GIF. Other tools enable users to edit out people who strolled into a frame.
Google also continued to improve the ability to automatically enhance images, by adding vignette, bumping up saturation, lightening shadows, removing redeye and more.
In addition, the company has improved the ability to search for images with keyword queries through enhanced image recognition and a broader library of search terms, like beach, sunset, dog and others.
Gundotra kicked off the morning session with an update on usage of Google+. Active users now total 540 million, including 300 million for the core social experience, he said. (It’s still unclear how Google defines the term active, and some are skeptical of these figures.) Users are uploading 1.5 billion photos each week, Gundotra said.
Google rolled out additional features for Google+ Hangouts as well, including support for GIFs, texts and location sharing inside the service.
“You can have one place to manage all your communication,” Gundotra said.
