PICTURES: Niyola – Toh Bad (B-T-S)

One of my personal favourite love songs of the year “Toh Bad” by EME’s 1st Lady Niyolanow has a video which will be released sometime in October. View pictures from the Kemi Adetiba-directed video shoot below.
“Set for an October 2013 release, NIYOLA who is signed to Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment, just concluded the video shoot for fans favorite; TOH BAD. You will recall that Niyola’s TOH BAD was released alongside CRAZY on May 22, 2013. The Oscar produced TOH BAD has over the past few months garnered impressive reviews from Fans, Industry watchers and Opinion moulders. TOH BAD continues to receive massive airplay on leading radio stations all over the country.
Described as a classic love song, it is no surprise that fans clamored loudly for a visual to TOH BAD and their wishes have been granted. The video was shot on location in New York and directed by prolific Cinematographer; Kemi Adetiba who was responsible for Bez’s Stay. The video for TOH BAD is currently in post-production and will be released in a couple of weeks. This will be Niyola’s second video on the Banky W/Segun Demuren owned Empire Mates Entertainment which is also home to Wizkid, Skales, Shaydee and DJ Xclusive.
Niyola is also set to drop two more singles in October and sources say plans are in the works for an exclusive event with Niyola sometime before the year ends.”

Chelsea Linked With £33m Argentine Playmaker Raid

Pastore Chelsea Bid

Stamford Bridge side target PSG attacker.
Chelsea are set to join a growing band of clubs taking an interest in PSG playmaker Javier Pastore according to the Daily Express.
The Argentine international is not having the best of times of it this term and now into his third season at the Parc des Princes the former Palermo man is being strongly linked with an exit from the Ligue 1 title holders.
Pastore has started just one of PSG’s last three Ligue 1 fixtures and has perhaps suffered as a result of the massive investment the French capital one club has made in new signings since he arrived at the club just over two years ago.
In his first season at PSG the flair player netted 13 goals and provided six assists in domestic league action alone, in his second campaign he managed four goals and nine assists and thus far this term Pastore hasn’t managed a goal or an assist and Laurent Blanc may therefore be considering offers for the 24 year old.
PSG spent £33m to sign Pastore and one wonders just how much they’d hope to recoup from any potential sale and that may well be crucial to the likelihood of any successful bid for his services.
Though Chelsea have an abundance of creative talent the fact that Jose Mourinho isn’t entirely convinced with Juan Mata’s place in his first team set-up could perhaps leave the door open to a potential bid for Pastore as the returning Blues boss looks to put his stamp on the squad he inherited from interim manager Rafa Benitez in the summer.

Arsenal To Make Fresh Newcastle United Raid as Arsene Wenger Targets Keeper Tim Krul

Krul Arsenal

Gunners ponder move for Magpies shot-stopper.
Having pursued Yohan Cabaye during the summer, Arsenal could look to Newcastle again as they eye a move for their Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul, according to the Daily Express.
Krul has been linked with the Gunners in the past after his impressive displays for Newcastle over the last few years, and the 25-year-old is on Arsene Wenger’s radar again as he seeks to bring in an improved option in goal.
Newcastle now seem to be targeting a move for £7m PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet as a potential replacement for Krul as they brace themselves for possible January bids from both Arsenal and Serie A giants AC Milan.
With Arsenal failing to bring in the likes ofJulio Cesar and Vicente Guaita over the summer, Wenger is still on the lookout for a ‘keeper to replace Wojciech Szczesny if his inconsistent form continues.
The Pole has been number one for Arsenal since the 2010/11 season, though he has not quite lived up to the potential he showed as a youngster, with some high-profile individual mistakes at points last year.
Emiliano Viviano has been brought in on a season-long loan from Palermo, though the Italian is thought to only be a backup measure.

Former United coach reveals how Moyes ignored Ferguson’s advice

Moyes_Ferguson

Former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, has revealed that David Moyes ignored Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice and brought in his own staff.
The former Everton boss took over from Ferguson over the summer and his predecessor advised him to keep assistant coach Mike Phelan, first team coach Rene Meulensteen and Steele. However, Moyes chose to release all of them and brought in Chris Woods, Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden with him from Everton. Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs also joined his coaching team.
United have endured a nonchalant start to the campaign, losing three times in their first six games – their worst start in 24 years. Steele says it might be because Moyes chose to break the winning formula.
“He spoke to me, Mick and Rene,” Steele told fanzone United We Stand. “I told him I thought it was a brave decision. He listened to the manager’s advice, but he wanted to be his own man.”
“I didn’t want to leave. Why would I? I knew that David was coming in and wondered who he’d bring.
“You had the United perspective – the manager saying, ‘Keep what we’ve got, keep the continuity, work with them and they’ll guide you through. You’re taking on a massive machine here. You’ve gone from Marks and Spencer’s to Harrods.’
“Then there’s David’s viewpoint, which I understand. I know him professionally. I know his work ethic, his hands-on approach.”
“I don’t blame him for doing what he did. I’ve been in the game long enough to know how it is.
“But it’s ironic, isn’t it? You’ve just been part of a team that has had a great season and won the league. David De Gea’s had his best season. Does it make sense that you’re not retained to continue the good work? Sadly, that’s out of my hands.”
“There were massive changes – the manager, chief executive, Scholes retiring and the coaches,” Steele said. “But there are enough players in that dressing room to win when it really starts.”
“My time was up, I’m proud of what I did at United and I have great memories.”

Replacing Messi will be tough, says Martino

Replacing Messi will be tough, says Martino

The 50-year-old recognises the significance the Argentine can have, but is confident in his team have the ability to cope without him against Celtic

Gerardo Martino has insisted he understands how big a loss Lionel Messi can be, but insists it is something Barcelona can overcome.

Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez and Neymar are considered viable options to replace the injured forward as the Catalans prepare for a chance at revenge against Celtic, who beat them in the group stage last season, on Tuesday.

Camp Nou coach Martino pointed out that Barcelona have played without Messi before and have plenty of players capable of stepping in to fill the void.

"For any team in the world it would be difficult to replace Messi," he told reporters. "Even for us, though we’ve got a great squad with outstanding players.

"We need to play well, even with him missing. I’m not sure it’s a test to play without him, though we’ve done it before."

Martino discussed his options for replacing Messi up front, but insists he will wait until closer to kick-off to make a decision.

"[Fabregas] is great at linking up with the three behind and he sets his team-mates up really well. With Leo we cause the opposition problems in the last 25 metres.

"Neymar also can’t be ruled out, just as Alexis can’t be. We’ve got various options and we’ll see which one is the best.

"It’s not always going to be that when Messi is out Fabregas replaces him."

Even though Martino was not coach when the Blaugrana suffered a 2-1 loss at Celtic Park last season, he admits Tuesday is a good opportunity to get revenge.

"Everyone is taking it for granted that the game will be like the one last year. We need to be more accurate and faster in our build-up play. It would be good for us to control the ball.

"I don’t think the players want revenge, rather just the chance to put things right. Barca are expected to play well. We’re constantly under microscopic scrutiny.

"There’s a lot to think about, but we need to focus on what’s ahead, not think about what happened last year."

Mourinho storms out of Chelsea press conference

Mourinho storms out of Chelsea press conference

The Blues boss objected to persistent questions relating to the omission of Kevin De Bruyne from his squad to take on Steaua Bucharest

Jose Mourinho walked out of his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea's Champions League clash with Steaua Bucharest.

Mourinho was angered by questions surrounding the absence of Belgian attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who did not travel to the Romanian capital after being left out of the squad.

The Portuguese's decision to leave Spanish playmaker Juan Mata out of a number of games this term has come under much scrutiny, although the 25-year-old is in line to start on Tuesday after setting up the equaliser in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Tottenham last Saturday.

Former Inter and Real Madrid manager Mourinho - in his second stint with Chelsea - has clearly grown tired of questions over his decisions, though, as the 50-year-old responded irritably following enquiries as to why De Bruyne has been omitted.

"This is fantastic because no one asks me about [Juan] Mata. You have spoken about Mata for three weeks. Now you're asking about Kevin," he told reporters.

"You are interested in the players who are not playing. He was not selected. It was my decision. Only 11 can play and I tried to decide, by what they do on the pitch when they play and in training.

"I try to be honest all the time. I was honest with Juan because of what he's done in training and what he's done in the game he played, and so he plays.

"With Kevin I didn't like the match he played against Swindon [in the League Cup], and I didn't like the way he was training.

"But you only ask about the guys who were not selected. Thank you."

Mourinho then left the room and will hope his players do the talking for him at the Arena Nationala as they look to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Basel in their opening Champions League fixture.

ASUP to Join ASUU Strike in Four Days

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) informed it would embark on an indefinite strike from October, 4, 2013, Friday, to press home their demands.
Mr. Chibuzo Asomugha, the National Chairman of the Union, gave this indication in a chat with P.M.NEWS in the morning of September 30, 2013, Monday.
He stated clearly that the lecturers had been asked to call off the industrial action which they embarked upon early this year but the Federal Government is yet to fulfill the promises made since then.
“We are going on an indefinite strike starting from Friday, 4 October, to remind the Federal Government of the promises they made when they asked us to go back to the classrooms early this year.
“The union believes that the government has failed us in that regard because we trusted them but the conditions were not met,” ASUP chairman stated.
He added that “for these reasons, we have instructed all our member institutions to stay away from the classrooms starting from Friday as we seek a permanent solution to the looming crisis in the education sector of the country.
“We can’t be taken for a ride continuously and that’s why we want a permanent resolution to the promises which had been made.”
This recent development will come as a worry to students in the country as the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is nowhere near its end.

NUPENG warns against breach of agreement

NIGERIA Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has warned Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria, PEDAN, and the oil marketers to fully implement provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA, and extant labour legislations to avoid industrial unrest.
The union spoke after signing a new CBA for the Petrol Station Workers, PSW, branch of NUPENG with PEDAN in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry.
NUPENG in a statement by its General Secretary, Isaac Aberare, lamented that the former agreement was haphazardly implemented by some of the members of PEDAN, while many totally refused to implement provisions of the CBA in defiance to extant labour legislations.
The statement read in part: “NUPENG has signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement, (CBA) for the Petrol Station Workers branch (PSW), with the Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN) in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry. The PSW branch of NUPENG comprises  pump operators, drivers, mechanics, watchmen, driveway supervisors, supervisors, book-keepers and station managers of petrol stations.
“The Union re-iterates that the former agreement was haphazardly implemented by some of the members of Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria, (PEDAN), while many totally refused to implement provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in defiance to extant labour legislations. The Union calls on Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN) and the oil marketers to use its best endeavour to ensure that the agreement is fully complied with to avoid any industrial dispute that can result to crisis in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry. NUPENG states that there is tension and restiveness among its members, as they are tired of being denied benefits provided in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.”
The statement added that the union expected “prompt positive action in the matter to avoid any confrontation with NUPENG as this will not augur well for their relationship. The agreement which will remain in force for a period of two years was signed on behalf of NUPENG by Comrade Igwe Achese, President, Comrade Isaac O. Aberare, General Secretary, Comrade Roland Abu, PSW branch Chairman and Comrade Abass Adegoke, Branch Secretary. The Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN) officials that signed are Alhaji Kabir Umar, National President, Comrade I. A. Eze, National Secretary-Secretary and Mazi Sweet Asouzu, for the Zonal Vice Presidents.”

Minister blames ports’ congestion on poor logistics

THE Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, has blamed the perennial congestion which has engulfed Ashaye terminal of the Tin Can Island port on inadequate logistics support of containers for scanning by the terminal operator.
Umar noted that the inefficient cargo transfer mechanism is the root cause of the worrisome situation that has also become a source of worry to the Presidency.
The Minister who was on a tour of some of the terminals, said that the issue of space constraint is another problem that the government will also look into in an effort to address the issue of port congestion.
Tin Can Island Container Terminal (TICT), as the terminal operator, has the responsibility of taking delivery of imported cargoes which it thereafter transfers to the scanning site of the service provider, Cotecna Destination Inspection company.
The Minister also decried the slow process of transfer of cargo by the Terminal Operator, adding that the incessant server break down, compounds goods clearing procedure.
According to the Minister who was accompanied by top officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) during the facts-finding tour, the congestion problem could have largely been averted, if the delays associated with feeding the scanning facilities with containers had been addressed.
He disclosed that though an average of 150-200 containers were being transferred daily, the service provider had maintained that its facilities had the capacity to scan a minimum of 400 boxes per day.
Senator Umar also noted that the situation was being compounded by the large number of empty containers at the terminal and ordered that a Committee to resolve the issue of empty containers be set up immediately.
He added that the Committee should be headed by the Executive Director, Port and Marine Operations of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), with representatives from Customs, TICT, NPA, Shipping Companies, Cotecna, APM Terminal, and clearing agents’ bodies.
“We went round the terminal with the Minister and the representatives of the service provider and the Terminal Operators, and we can all see the problem. TICT has a lot of cargo, no space because empty containers have taken over most of the available spaces.
Cotecna is waiting to scan, no cargo transfer from TICT because of transportation problem.

Two Okada Riders Remanded In Prison Custody For Alleged Murder

court1
Two Okada men – Folorunsho Aliu and Akinwale Ogunro – have been remanded in prison on the orders of an Akure Magistrates’ Court over alleged murder of a 27-year-old man, Deji Afolabi.
The Magistrate, Mrs Florence Adesida, on Monday said the accused, Aliyu (37) and Ogunro (30), should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Meanwhile, the accused, resident at Iwaro Oka in Ondo State, are being tried for conspiracy and murder.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Adeoye Adesegun, had told the court that they allegedly committed the offences with others still at large on Aug. 21.
He added that the offence took place at Iron Base Barricade (Oju Irin) junction, Iwaro Oka in Akoko North West Local Government Area.
According to him, the accused shot the deceased with a gun during a fight between them at Iron Base Barricade (Oju Irin) junction in the area.
“The deceased was confirmed dead as a result of the injuries he sustained in his body during the fight.”
Adesegun said that the offences contravened the Criminal Code of Ondo State, 2006.
However, counsel to the accused, Mr Idowu Balogun’s plea, was not considered by Adesida.
She later adjourned the case to Oct. 12 for mention. (NAN

Intercontinental Lagos - Tallest Hotel In West-Africa - Launched

The tallest hotel in West Africa, Intercontinental Lagos, built at a cost of N30 billion, was unveiled in Lagos yesterday.

The hotel located at Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria is a 23-storey building containing 358 rooms and 37 suites and a Presidential suite.

The Intercontinental Lagos, a subsidiary of the Intercontinental Hotel Group, IHG, is owned by the Milan Group.

Chairman, Milan Group, Ramesh Valechha said the hotel would change the landscape of Lagos and boost the hospitality industry in the state.

He disclosed that Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed on 31 March, 2004 while it took two years to complete the design work before the conceptualisation of the project began.

He stated that the Lagos State Government, Skye Bank and Wema Bank were supportive of the project.

Valechha disclosed the building of the hotel cost over N30 billion while 650 jobs were created for Nigerians.

Regional General Manager, IHG, Africa, Karl Hala said the hotel is the leading hotel in Nigeria, saying the group had 170 Intercontinental Hotels in 60 countries of the world.

He described the unveiling of the hotel in Lagos as a significant milestone in the hospitality industry, adding that the group also had 20 Intercontinental Hotels in Africa and that the hotel was the only 5-star hotel in Nigeria.

Chief Executive Officer, Design Group, Bayo Odunlami said it took lots of challenging moment in the design and conceptualization of the project, saying he was happy that the group overcame the hurdles.

World holds breath as US government shutdown imminent

Hundreds of thousands of US government workers came to work Monday without knowing whether they will be needed on Tuesday, as federal agencies faced a devastating shutdown.
Lawmakers in the bitterly divided Congress had only a few hours left to pass a stopgap budget measure and to beat the midnight deadline, but there was little sign of compromise.
President Barack Obama has warned that a freeze in non-essential federal spending could have catastrophic effects on the shaky economic recovery, and cost thousands of jobs.
But Congressional leaders have been unable to wrangle a compromise from feuding clans of lawmakers, arguing instead over who takes the blame for the first shutdown in 17 years.
If the deadline expires without a deal the failure will have a global impact. Oil prices slid and European and Asian shares fell, amid fears for the world’s largest economy.
And, at a more domestic level, as the Washington day began staff at federal agencies were warned that their children would not be able to attend government daycare centers on Tuesday.
Some members of Congress tried to put a brave face on the impasse with 15 hours left to thrash out an improbable compromise between the Republican-led House and Democratic Senate.
But most observers agreed the moves were dead in the water from the moment Republicans linked budget legislation to a bid to thwart Obama’s health care law.
After the Senate passed a straightforward spending bill on Friday, the House countered by attaching amendments seeking a one-year delay to Obamacare and the repeal of a medical device tax which helps fund the law.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who refused to call the chamber into session over the weekend despite the looming deadline, warned that this would not stand.
“The Senate will do exactly what we said we would do and reject these measures,” Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson said.
“At that point, Republicans will be faced with the same choice they have always faced: put the Senate’s clean funding bill on the floor and let it pass with bipartisan votes, or force a Republican government shutdown.”
As lawmakers traded blame, the Democratic leadership sounded resigned about a pending shutdown.
Asked if he believed government would shutter on Tuesday, Reid’s number two Senator Dick Durbin said: “I’m afraid I do.”
Republican House Speaker John Boehner has been under intense pressure from a small band of conservative diehards who forced the party to double down on their anti-Obamacare strategy.
With polls showing most voters would blame a shutdown on the Republicans rather than Obama, Reid insisted: “The American people will not be extorted by Tea Party anarchists.”
But Boehner branded the brinksmanship “an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership.”
Some Asian markets fell sharply, and Europe followed suit, albeit in part because of fears for the political crisis in Italy.
Oil prices were also down, and analysts said traders were following the situation in the United States closely.
“Things are far from the ‘panic stage’, but they don’t have to be for investors to be spooked by the apparent intractability of the US political deadlock,” said Tachibana Securities market analyst Kenichi Hirano.
US and foreign investors fear a shutdown will create a poisonous environment ahead of mid-October talks to increase the amount of money the country is authorized to borrow.
If the debt ceiling is not raised, Washington could run out of cash and default on its loan payments, and Republicans have already warned they will make this their next battlefield.

Gunmen massacre 78 students in Yobe

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram sect members yesterday went on rampage in Gujba community, Yobe state where they opened fire on the students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, at 3a.m. as they slept in their hostels. They later moved to other houses, where they killed residents at will.
They also blocked the Damaturu-Maiduguri road and killed travellers.
At the end of the attack, 78 persons lay dead, while several others were still missing.
According to members of the community, soldiers arrived the scene two hours after the gunmen had left.
The gunmen were said to be wearing military camouflage with black bandanas round their heads.
An official of DamaturuSpecialistHospital, who requested anonymity, said “immediately after the attack, 40 bodies were brought to the morgue and all are believed to have been students of the College of Agriculture in Gujba.”
The number, however, increased as more bodies were recovered from the bush.
Military spokesman, Lazarus Eli told newsmen that security forces were at the scene, but that details on the number of dead and injured were not yet available.
He added that the early morning assault was targeted at the College of Agriculture in Gujba, YobeState.
“It was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists, who went into the school and opened fire on students while they were sleeping,” he added.
A police source, who requested anonymity, said that initial reports indicated the death toll could be higher, but he was not prepared to discuss figures.
Provost of the College, Molima Idi Mato, said: “They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels. They opened fire at them.”
He said he could not give an exact death toll as security forces were still recovering bodies of students mostly aged between 18 and 22.
”The school’s surviving students have fled,” he added.
One of the surviving students, Idris, who would not give his first name, said: “They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them.
“It was so terrible. They came with guns around 1a.m. and went directly to the male hostel and opened fire on them”
Ahmed Gujunba, a taxi driver who lives by the college said: “The college is in the bush, so the other students were running around helplessly as guns went off and some of them were shot down.”
Gujba is about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from Damaturu, the state capital.
Yobe has seen a series of brutal attacks targeting students in recent months, all blamed on Boko Haram.
By afternoon after the attack, scores of travellers were also killed, by suspected members of Boko Haram in YobeState.
The militants were said to have blocked Damaturu-Maiduguri Road, shooting indiscriminately.
An eyewitness, who was on his way to Maiduguri, told the media that at least 20 persons were killed.
The witness said: “The situation is terrible. They blocked our way, and were spraying people with bullets.
“Some of us managed to run into the bush. At least, 20 persons were shot dead in the three buses before us.”
NGF seeks end to attacks
Meanwhile, the Northern States Governors’ Forum, yesterday, urged security agencies to “take urgent steps to halt the senseless killing of defenceless citizens.”
Speaking through its chairman, Governor Babangida Aliyu of NigerState, the forum in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Danladi Ndayebo, also called for an end to “attacks on places of worship and educational facilities.”
It said: “The forum is particularly alarmed that the shooting to death of 38 students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, YobeState, followed the same pattern as the killing of 22 students and a teacher at GovernmentSecondary School, Mamudo, in the same state last July.”
It called on security agencies to intensify efforts at protecting the lives and property of citizens, and also ensure that those behind the violence in the region, were apprehended and brought to justice.
Mark, Ndoma-Egba  condemn massacre
Senate President, David Mark and Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, have described the massacre of scores of students at the college by gunmen as a dastardly act and unfortunate as it has a negative impact on the future of Nigeria.
The Senate President and the Senate Leader in their separate condolences commiserated with the people and government of YobeState over the massacre
Senator Mark said: “Violence has never produced any positive result neither has it any solution to problems or grievances.
“If you have any grievances, the only way out is through dialogue. Resorting to killing others can only add to the problem and not solution.
“There are more than enough channels of communication and ways of redressing misgivings.
“These killings, especially innocent citizens are not part of our culture. They are truly alien to us. All right thinking members of the society must rise up to end this carnage raging our land.”

ASUU Strike: Jonathan calls for review of labour laws

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday advocated a review of labour laws to curtail the excesses of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other labour unions.
The President, who made the call during a Presidential media chat in Abuja, urged the striking members of ASUU to return to work in the interest of their students and the education sector.
The President also said it was inconceivable that lecturers in state-owned universities would go on strike over issues concerning the allowances of lecturers in federal universities.
He said such a situation would not occur if well-guided and well-thought out laws were in place regulating labour union activities.

Jonathan also said that the N79 billion Earned Allowance arrears, which was the major reason for the ASUU strike, was not supposed to be paid from the federation account.
According to the President, earned allowances ought to be paid from the Internally Generated Revenue of the universities, if a good labour law is in place.
Jonathan called on the striking ASUU to reconsider its stand by accepting government offer, and call its members back to the classrooms.
The President reiterated the commitment of his administration to adequately fund the universities and provide the necessary infrastructure to aid the education sector
Jonathan said that the PDP-led administration had done quite well, despite all the odds and challenges
According to him, Nigeria is better off in the past years of the PDP-led government with improved standard of living, building of more federal universities, improved telecommunication, railways and roads.
The President assured that with the commitment of his administration to the privatisation of the power sector, electricity supply would become stable by the end of the first quarter of 2014. (NAN)

4-year-old stolen boy found in Onitsha

The Enugu State Police Command has found a four-year-old boy, who was allegedly stolen at his school three months ago.
A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Ebere Amarizu, on Monday in Enugu said the kid was found on Sept. 26 at the residence of a couple, Mr and Mrs Ejiofor Eze, at Awada Layout in Onitsha, Anambra.
The statement said that Mr and Mrs Eze, residing at Awada in Onitsha, allegedly stole the kid at his school at Achara Layout, Enugu on July 2.
“Following intensive investigation by the Anti-Kidnap Unit of the Enugu State Police Command, it was discovered that the boy was held hostage by the couple in their house.
“Ejiofor Eze and his wife are the brain behind the stealing of the boy.’’
The statement said that the boy was in good health and had rejoined his family.
It said, however, that the couple was currently on the run, noting that the police had been on their trail. (NAN)

Electricity workers protest handing over of PHCN to new investors

PHCN
Some disengaged workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Lagos and Edo on Monday staged protests over non-payment of their terminal benefits before handing over to the new investors.
The President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday handed over the certificates and licence to buyers of successor companies of PHCN.
The  gesture signaled the government’s disengagement from the management of the plants.
The Federal Government would, however, continue to oversee the transmission network in the interim.
All the PHCN offices in Lagos were under lock and key, while the workers, serving or retired, carried placards with various inscriptions demanding for payment of their benefits.
Some of the inscriptions read: “Pay our money; we are ready to leave, “Over 50 per cent of workers’ benefits are still outstanding” and “FG should pay us before handing over.”
In Auchi, the workers also stormed the major streets calling on the Federal Government to pay their entitlements before handing over to the new investors.
Mr Adeleke Ibrahim, the chairman, Lagos State Chapter, National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), said that the protest was because of government’s failure to pay them before handling the companies to new owners.
Ibrahim said that the Federal Government had not paid severance package, pensions and gratuities to about  50,951 workers as at Sept. 27.
“It is expected that the agencies saddled with the responsibility of paying the workers’ benefits would have done that before officially handing over to the new investors.
“PHCN workers nationwide will not leave their offices until all our severance packages are duly paid by the government’s agencies saddled with the computation of the packages,’’ he said.
Mr Olusegun Afolorunso, the NUEE chairman in Eko Electricity Distribution Company, said that only 25 per cent of the workers had been paid.
“We were directed on Sunday night by our leaders that all our offices should be locked in protest against non-payment of our severance packages.
“Though, the Federal Government has commenced payment, only 25 per cent of the entire workers nationwide were settled.
“The new investors just want to come and take over our offices as directed by the Federal Government without settling our benefits that is why we are protesting,“ he said.
Mr Ganiyu Iyaniwura, the union chairman in PHCN Ijora Business District, said, “we planned our own independent protest because of the non-payment of our arrears by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company.
“We are being owed backlogs of 11 months from 2011 to 2012 before the National Electricity Liability Management (NELCO) took over.
“We want to know the plan the Federal Government has for us because when you are handing over to new companies they are supposed to take over on a clean slate.
“The new companies that are coming do not know us. So, the Federal Government should settle us first,“ he said.
Mr Adebola Adedoja, the Lagos Island Chapter chairman of the National Union of Pensioners, said that the Federal Government still owed pensioners some benefits.
Mr Shaibu Nassir, the NUEE Secretary in Edo, said that the protest was to register the workers’ grievances against the handing over of PHCN to the new investors without the settlement of their severance packages.
“The Federal Government and the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE) cannot hand over PHCN to new investors without settling the labour issues as earlier agreed with the union.
“All our entitlements have not been settled by the Federal Government and BPE officials are all over the PHCN offices across the states planning to hand over,’’ he said.
Mr Kareem Iluedo, the Chairman of NUEE, Auchi Chapter, said that Federal Government had not paid majority of the PHCN workers.
“We are not against privatisation, but all benefits accrued to us must be paid before the handing over.
“We are ready to work along with the Federal Government, but all the labour issues should be settled.
“We are afraid of being thrown into the labour market without collecting our full entitlements,’’ he said. (NAN)
