FG urged to invest in footwear industry

Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga

The Federal Government has been urged to strengthen the footwear industry through massive investment. An Ireland-based footwear industrialist, Mr. Sola Benson, made the call in an interview with Saturday PUNCH in Lagos. He described the footwear sector as a major
revenue earner for the economy. Benson urged the Federal Government to invest in empowering and encouraging the youth to embrace it. Calling for an update of footwear curriculum in Nigerian tertiary institutions, Benson lamented that the Nigerian footwear market is saturated with imported sub-standard shoes despite the fact raw materials are available in the country. Benson said that as a sector involving a chain of activities, the footwear sector has the potential of employing many people. He said, “What students are being taught in the colleges is outdated. Creativity is at its peak at the points of conceptualisation, designs and production. These current trends have to be inculcated into teaching. “The fact that everybody needs a footwear shows how economically viable the sector is. We need to emphasise production and handcrafts because that is the future of any
economy.

  1. Hosting an in-store event like a fashion show or a teaching session will not only generate buzz and awareness for your store, but also sell a lot of shoes! Have your featured products fully-visible using a vertical banner or even a window cling so customers know which shoes they're going to learn about shoe market
