The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Kano State says it has set up a Mobile Court to try road traffic offenders.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, Malam Mohammed Garba, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Saturday.
Garba said the court was meant to check the excesses of some drivers who have become habitual violators of traffic rules and regulations.
“The commission has so far arrested and prosecuted about 490 persons in the seven operations.
“The mobile court was established with the support of the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice who gave us one magistrate,” he said.
According to him, the commission has commenced a special patrol in the state ahead of the “ember months” with a view to reducing road traffic accidents within the period.
He attributed the high rate of road accidents in the state to recklessness.
To correct that, he said, the commission had started public enlightenment campaigns to sensitise drivers on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations.
“Our aim is to sensitise commercial drivers on the dangers of over loading and speeding and all other forms of recklessness on the highways,” he said.
The sector commander called on the people of the state, especially commercial drivers, to cooperate with the commission to ensure accident-free “ember” period. (NAN)
