World Cup qualifying: Cape Verde stun Tunisia to move into final round

The 10 teams to reach the final qualification
stage in the CAF region have been confirmed,
with Nigeria also progressing while South Africa
and Morocco miss out Cameroon and Cape Verde Islands have sealed
their place amongst the 10 sides who have
qualified for the final play-off round of CAF
World Cup qualifying.
Cameroon secured their progress with a 1-0
victory over Group I rivals Libya on Sunday, with Aurelien Chedjou’s first international goal in
the 42nd minute enough to keep his side top.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, beat Tunisia 2-0 to
progress at their opponent's expense in a
stunning result. Platini opened the scoring for
Cape Verde in the 28th minute, before Ramos Nhuck doubled the advantage three minutes
before half-time.

Burkina Faso also sealed their place in the final
round with a 1-0 win over Gabon, as Prejuce
Nakoulma scored the only goal nine minutes
after the break to send his side through at the
expense of Congo, who could only draw 2-2
with Niger. Meanwhile, Senegal did enough to progress
after defeating Group J rivals Uganda 1-0.
A win for Uganda would have seen them qualify
ahead of their rivals, but they faced an uphill
struggle when Godfrey Walusimbi was shown a
straight red card in the 36th minute. The winner came courtesy of Sadio Mane six
minutes from time as Senegal made it safely
through.
Ethiopia's passage was less assured as they
had to come from behind against Central
African Republic to seal their place in the final round.
Les Fauves went ahead through Salif Keita
midway through the first 45 minutes, but
second-half strikes from Saladin Said Ahmed
and Menyahel Teshome ensured Ethiopia's
progress. Nigeria were another side to seal their passage
into the final round as they defeated 10-man
Malawi 2-0.
A win for Malawi would have seen them qualify,
but an Emmanuel Emenike goal in first-half
stoppage time and a Victor Moses penalty on 51 minutes saw the Super Eagles through.
South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco and Mali were
amongst the major sides to miss out on
progression during the second stage of the
qualification process, ending their hopes of a
ticket to Brazil. The 10 teams to progress are now one step
away from a place in the World Cup next
summer, with five two-legged play-off
matches, taking place in October and
November, deciding Africa’s final qualifiers for
the tournament.
