David Luiz has denied he has to prove anything to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, the Daily Mail has reported, as the Brazil international insists he is content with the squad rotation the Portuguese has engaged in this season despite at times being left out of the team altogether.
Luiz was not even named as a substitute for Chelsea’s home fixture with Fulham but did start against Swindon Town in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. And he says he understands the need for a big squad, noting: “Playing is better than training but we are a big club with many, many good players. If we had just 11 players we could not win anything.
“When others are left out nobody says anything, but I don’t need to prove anything,” Luiz continued. “Everyone knows who David Luiz is. Sometimes the manager puts me in, sometimes not. It’s his choice.
“The boss chooses his 11 players and his philosophy is to do the best job for Chelsea,” the former Benfica defender added. “He is a manager who wants everyone to work hard. I am privileged to play for a big club. That’s why I stay at Chelsea, so when I have an opportunity to play I enjoy it.”
Luiz moved to Stamford Bridge in January 2011 and has gone on to make 113 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals. He also has 29 caps for his country and this summer helped Brazil win the Confederations Cup on home soil, beating world champions Spain in the final.
