Unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have struck again in Benin City, Edo State, this time with the abduction of a Deputy Comptroller of prisons identified as T. C Ashibuogwu.
Ashibuogwu was recently posted to Zone G (Benin) comprising of Anambra, Edo, Ebonyi, Edo, Delta and Enugu States from Abuja.
He was reportedly snatched along Sapele road close to his residence while returning from work.
Family sources said his kidnappers are demanding unspecified sums running into millions of naira as ransom for his release.
Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, DSP Moses Eguaveon confirmed the incident and said efforts were on to track down the kidnappers.
There have been recent high-profile kidnappings in Edo despite police crackdown on the perpetrators. Some few weeks back, prominent rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, was kidnapped in the state alongside his driver and they are yet to regain neither their freedom nor their location identified.
Over 500 suspected kidnappers are currently awaiting trial in the state and the House of Assembly before going on recess, passed a bill that prescribes capital punishment for kidnappers but Governor Adams Oshiomhole is yet to sign the bill into law.
