ASUU Blasts Maku for Saying Its Demands Will Shut Down Nigeria, Calls Him ‘Ignorant’

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has rebuked the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, for his statement on September 4, 2013, Wednesday, which said Nigeria would shut down if the Federal Government grants all the demands by the striking university lecturers. The Union called the speech of the minister as a careless utterance and indication of his ignorance of the agreement between the FG and ASUU. Dr. Charles Ononuju, the ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone, made a statement in which he urged the Nigerians to disregard the minister’s point of view, while asking Mr. Maku to apologise for such unguarded comments and warned him to stop playing politics with the future of the Nigerian child. “Nigerians should ignore the careless utterance by the Minister of Information that the country will shut down if ASUU’s demand is met. It seems the minister has not seen or read the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement. “The country has not shut down with constant government wastages and billions of dollars being stolen. The minister should apologise to Nigerians for such unguarded comments and stop playing politics with the future of Nigerian child,” the Union stated.
