Army sends senior officers to North East to monitor deployment of troops

The Nigerian Army has sent a
combined team of senior officers from the
Army and Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to
different locations in the North Eastern part
of the country. This is contained in a statement issued on
Friday in Abuja and signed by the Director
of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Chris
Olukolade. The statement said the team was to
monitor the deployment of troops to the 7
Division of the Nigerian Army. It said the team would assess the level of
effectiveness of the Division’s deployment
in handling the next phase of the security
operations in its area of responsibility. “They will on return to Abuja, brief the Chief
of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army
Staff on the present state of the mission
being undertaken by the Division.’’ The News Agency Nigeria (NAN) recalls that
the 7 Division was formed recently to take
over the security operations meant to check
terrorist activities as ordered by President
Goodluck Jonathan. The statement said that the Chief of Army
Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubike Ihejirika, would on
Friday (Sept. 6) visit Maiduguri, to assess
the deployment of troops of the newly
formed Division. It added that after being briefed by the
Division’s General Officer Commanding,
Ihejirika would visit some locations of the
troops and equipment of the formation. The statement said that the formation had
been tasked to continue the operations to
flush out terrorists from the North East. It would be recalled that President Goodluck
Jonathan on May 14 declared a state of
emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in
response to increasingly violent attacks by
the Boko Haram sect. He ordered the army to take all necessary
action, “within the ambit of their rules of
engagement, to put an end to the impunity
of insurgents and terrorists’’. (NAN)
