35-yr-old polytechnic staff shot dead in Bayelsa

A 35-year-old man was, weekend,
shot dead by gunmen suspected to be hired
assassins at Agudama community in Yenagoa
Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The deceased, identified as Frank Moses, was a
staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ekeowe, in
Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. It was learnt that the deceased, a father of
two, was the Financial Secretary of the Senior
Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics,
SSANIP, Ekeowe chapter. He was said to have been killed few minutes
after celebrating with other neighbours at the
end of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup match
between Nigeria and Mexico, last Friday. The deceased, an indigene of Okiki in Ogbia
Local Government Area, who is a cousin to the
Special Adviser to the President on Research
and Documentation, Mr. Oronto Douglas, was
shot dead few metres from his house. The family of the deceased led by Frank Talent
alleged that the preliminary investigations
conducted by the family and text messages on
his mobile phone showed that he might have
been murdered over labour crisis rocking the
institution on issues of unpaid 28 days allowance to newly employed workers of the
polytechnic. Frank Talent said the gunmen had laid ambush
for his brother in an uncompleted building
close to his house and shot him on the head. According to him, “the jubilating Eaglets
supporters tried to pursue and apprehend the
killers but failed. They however apprehended a
woman.” Contacted on the development, the state
Police Commissioner, Mr. Hillary Okpara
confirmed the incident. He said: “The police have apprehended a
suspect, but we are keeping an open mind on
the investigation and we will give an update
when we are through.”
