As parts of its measures to curb the
threat posed by terrorists across the country,
the State Security Services, SSS, has deployed
advance technologies and improved human
capacity development to achieve its goal of protecting Nigeria cities. The Director-General of the State Security
Service, Ekpenyong Ita who disclosed this at
the graduation ceremony of the Executive
Intelligence Management Course for 47
participants at the Institute for Security
Studies, Lower Usuma Dam, Bwari, weekend in Abuja, assured that the Service remained
steadfast in her determination and
commitment to proactively identify and
neutralise security threats. Ita while speaking at the graduation ceremony
with theme, “Year 2020: The Challenges of
Security Sector Synergy in the Democratic
Culture”, said applications of these
technologies and human capacity development
is already achieving desired result on national security as the relevant agencies have
prevented Boko Haram from operating in
cities. He stressed the importance of equipping
serving and prospective executives of critical
organisations in the public and private sectors
with appropriate competences to manage
security related issues effectively. Ita explained that as part of the human capacity
development programme of the agency, 12
staff would soon attend Harvard University for
further studies, which he said would empower
them for leadership roles. He the SSS had in the last three years provided
training in various spheres of security
endeavours for 1,248 participants drawn from
critical government organisations and various
foreign countries. According to him, “this service has therefore
placed great premium on the acquisition of
advanced technology for its operations through
cutting edge know-how in keeping with
international best practices. What this has
translated to, is the procurement of intelligence products that are more precise,
credible, reliable, accurate and I dare say,
faultless.” Noting that the acquisition of enhanced
intellectual capability alone cannot make for
meaningful achievement without
commensurate technical support, the DG said
that the SSS through the EIMC programme, is
placing priority on a more efficient security sector governance and management through
synergy. He said the EIMC programme was expanded
and extended to critical agencies in the private
sector because of the need for collective
participation in the nation’s security
management.
