Crystal Palace have announced the signing of
Marouane Chamakh from Arsenal on a one-year
contract.
Chamakh, 29, joined Arsenal from Bordeaux on a
free transfer in 2010 but, despite initially
impressing, he later struggled for form and fell
down the pecking order. The Morocco international was allowed to spend
time on loan at West Ham United last season and
he has now completed a permanent switch to
Selhurst Park. Ian Holloway, the Palace manager, had recently
questioned Arsenal’s handling of the player. “Arsenal were fools not to pick him,” he said.
“When they did, he scored, and you can’t score
goals when you’re understudy to Robin van
Persie and not be picked, can you?” Chamakh joins a Palace attack already featuring
40-year-old Kevin Phillips, who recently penned a
one-year contract extension, and Dwight Gayle,
who signed from Peterborough this summer for
a club-record fee.
