Flood drowns secondary school student in Enugu

Residents of Abakpa Nike in Enugu State were on Tuesday thrown into mourning following the drowning of an 18-year old girl, Miss Onyinye Akabogu by heavy flood.
The flood was caused by a heavy downpour which started around 6.am and lasted till noon.
It was gathered that Miss Akabogu, a JSS II student of MIC College Abakpa Nike was on her way to school when the flood swept her away.
The victim, who reportedly left home for school in the company of her brother who is also a student of MIC College, is yet to be seen as at the time of filling this report.
A source very close to the family said they were very close to the school when flood came and swept the victim away.
According to the source, “when the victims were carried by the flood, some passengers in an Abakpa bound commercial bus struggled to rescue the younger one.
“However, an attempt to pull the older one out failed as her school uniform turn apart. At that point, she was carried by the flood”.
Our source disclosed that her parents recently parked to Ugbo-Ezeji from Nike road.
The incident threw the MIC College into confusion as students gathered in groups and discussed what happened to their colleague.
DailyPost gathered that within this rainy season, Abakpa and other neighbourhoods of Enugu have witnessed incidents of flooding, often linked to poor drainage system and abandoned road construction sites.
Last month, flood wreaked havoc in the city, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
Although no life was lost, about 30 buildings were affected by the flood, leading to the destruction of people’s fences, automobiles, furniture, electronics and other household properties.
