Nigeria’s overall generation capacity is expected to drop to 2400 megawatts with the shutting down of the 480 Mw Okpai Combined Cycle Turbine operated by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), which will reduce available power on the grid by 300mw.
According to a statement, yesterday, from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Abuja, the imminent shut down for scheduled annual maintenance of the plant located in Delta State is expected to last for about five days, starting from August 31 through September 4, 2013.
TCN said in the statement that the exercise was intended to improve the performance of Nigeria’s electricity grid that would also result in nationwide electricity load-shedding, adding that the country’s grid network would be better for it upon completion.
“The management of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to notify the general public that Agip Okpai Power Station in Delta State will shut down its plants for scheduled annual maintenance between 31st August and 4th September, 2013.
“Consequently, grid generation will go down by 300MW resulting in load shedding nationwide. This exercise is intended to improve grid performance and equipment stability. TCN regrets inconveniences that its esteemed customers will experience during this period,” the statement explained.
